PURPOSE:To prevent misoperations, to improve operatability and to save energy by automatically setting a recording or reproducing mode based on the condition of an optical system protecting cover. CONSTITUTION:A system controller 21 checks a power supply level and in case of a level enabling the operation of a camera, a protecting cover detecting mechanism 30 judges the opening/closing state of a protecting cover 10 for an optical system 11 after a power source is turned on. When the closed state is detected, the system controller 21 initializes the camera in the reproducing mode and executes respective control processings in the reproducing mode. When the opened state is detected, the camera is initialized in the recording mode, and respective control processings are executed in the recording mode. Thus, the misoperation of a manual recording/reproducing mode changeover setting switch 31 is prevented, and energy is prevented from being wasted by turning-on the power source by judging the recording mode although it is the reproducing mode. |
