Latent thiol mercaptan chain transfer agents and their use in the synthesis of polymers are described. In addition, novel polymers and block copolymers formed using these latent thiol mercaptan chain transfer agents are described. The latent thiol mercaptan chain transfer agents comprise at least one thiol functional group and at least one protected thiol group. The polymers and coploymers are useful in adhesives, mastics or caulks or as compatibilizers for physical blends of at least two polymers.
