Microparticles of a material are formed by bringing a supercritical antisolvent gas into contact with a solution of the material in a solvent at a controlled rate operable to expand the solution and presipitate the material. The small particulate material formed in accordance with the invention is particularly useful in the preparation of devices that provide control of the rate of drug release.
