PURPOSE:To produce a molded article having a high surface hardness by coating the surface of the molded article with a polymer having units derived from a polyfunctional monomer having (meth)acryloyloxy groups, exposing the surface to ultraviolet rays, treating it with an alkali, coating it with a specific silica- based condensation polymer, and curing the condensation polymer. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a molded article (e.g. one made from an acrylic resin) is coated with a polymer contg. at least 30wt.% units derived from a polyfunctional monomer having at least two (meth)acryloyloxy groups (e.g. dipentaerythritol hexaacrylate) in the molecule, exposed to ultraviolet rays with wave lengths of 300nm or lower, treated with 0.1-50wt.% aq. sodium hydroxide soln. at 0-100 deg.C for 0.01-100hr to form an acidic group in an amt. of at least 0.02mumol/cm<2>, and coated with a silica-based condensation polymer obtd. by the cohydrolysis and copolycondensation of a colloidal silica, two specific silane compds. (e.g. tetraethoxysilane and glycidoxymethyltrimethoxysilane), magnesium perchlorate, an org. solvent, etc. Then, the condensation polymer is cured. |
