PURPOSE:To constantly provide a good burning when fuel is injected in the inlet stroke and in the compression stroke. CONSTITUTION:In an internal combustion engine where a required fuel injection quantity Q is injected dividedly in the inlet stroke and in the compression stroke, the fuel injection quantity QS in the inlet stroke is determined by multiplying the Q by a division factor QR, and the fuel injection quantity Q in the compression stroke is determined by subtracting the QS from the Q. The QR is found from a map maded on the basis of the Q, and corrected by a correction value KQR. The burning state is judged based on the pressure in the cylinder. When an initial misfire is produced in the judged burning state, and it is a rich misfire, the KQR is increased, and when it is a lean misfire, the KQR is reduced. On the other hand, when no misfire is produced, and the flame propagation is judged defective, the KQR is increased.
