9,10-DIHYDROXY-9-OXA-PHOSPOPENANTREN-10-OXIDE DERIVATIVE AND PREPARATION THEREOF

9,10-Dihydro-9-oxa-10-phospho penanthrene derivs. of formula (I) useful as a flame retardant are new. In (I), Z=O; A=C1-3 alkyl; R1 and R2 each = halogen, S or O-containing C2-19 aryl or alkyl; R3= phenyl or C6H5O-; X= 1-100; Y=-OH or -O-. Also claimed is the prepn. of (I) which comprises a reflux reaction of a diol deriv. of formula (II) with a phosphonic dichloride deriv. of formula (III) in a nonpolar solvent under an inert gas flow (150-170 deg.C). The cpds. (I) are useful as phosphorus-containing flame retardants.
