Addition to 300,658, [Class 7 (iii), Internalcombustion engines, Carburetting-apparatus &c. for]. [Class 7 (iii).] In a modified form of the engine described in the parent Specification, a spherical vaporizing and pre-combustion chamber or bulb B communicates with the cylinder through a form of Venturi passage V in the walls of which are openings T, T<1> communicating with the space surrounding the portions of the passage extending into the vaporizing chamber and the cylinder, respectively. During the compression stroke, fuel which has collected in the lower part C of the bulb enters the air stream through the inclined openings T and produces a preliminary combustion which heats a metallic protuberance A and maintains it at ignition temperature. Following the combustion in the bulb B, the contents thereof are projected through the passage V into the cylinder, some of the air in the cylinder being aspirated through openings T<1> as the gases pass through the lower portion of the passage. Fuel admitted during the suction stroke through a valve G flows over the walls of the bulb B to the lower portion C, or it may be admitted directly to that portion by a small injector mounted at the side of the lower part of the bulb.
