PURPOSE:To obtain the subject unit operable in a short time after start-up with vigorous smoking by bringing an exothermic element into contact with a specified area of the bottom of a container containing e.g. a smoking agent therein and by combusting the exothermic element from below. CONSTITUTION:An exothermic element 4 is first brought into contact, either directly or through a metallic plate 5 of <=2mm thickness, with the outer surface of the bottom of a metallic container 1 containing a smoking agent or fumigant therein. Then, the exothermic element is combusted from below using e.g. an igniting equipment 7. The ratio of the contact area B of the exothermic element or metallic plate to the bottom area A of the container 1 (B/A) is set at 0.2-0.9.
