PRODUCTION OF SIALON-BASED SINTERED COMPACT

PURPOSE:To provide a method for producing a SIALON-based sintered compact in which the dense ceramic sintered compact, excellent in fracture toughness value and containing SIALON as a parent phase can be obtained without deteriorating high-temperature strength or sinterability. CONSTITUTION:Silicon nitride containing an aluminum alkoxide in an amount within the range of 5 to 30wt.% is mixed with silicon carbide in an amount within the range of 5 to 30 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. silicon nitride. Furthermore, hafnium oxide in an amount within the range of 0.2-40 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. silicon nitride is mixed therewith. The mixtures are formed into a desired shape and the obtained compact is then sintered.
