This variable shock-absorption system for a bridge is intended to be fitted between a superstructure (1) and an infrastructure element (2) of the bridge. According to the invention, this system is characterised in that it can freely alter its shock-absorption characteristic so as to distribute the inertial force of the superstructure (1) produced during an earthquake over the infrastructure element (2) and also reduce the vibrations, and in that it can furthermore be used as a stop for preventing excessive response of the shock-absorption device. <IMAGE>
