System making it possible to transmit information by the tracks of a railway system. The devices likely to be made use of by operating personnel (the driving cabs of trains especially) are equipped with a transmitter/receiver capable of transmitting interrogation signals, of detecting received signals, of processing these signals and of supplying any useful information (position, type, speed of movement) about any obstacle possibly being on the track. The devices, where operating personnel are not normally present (rail-end buffers, points for example), are equipped with responders which detect the interrogation signals from the drive cabs and respond by an echo signal.
