After a stack of layered textile fabrics has been cut ot stamped to give a number of pattern shapes, the edge of the waste portion of the stack is clamped. A relative movement is applied parallel to the patterned cut surfaces so that the waste material and cut pattern material are partially sepd. The spreading action is continued until the waste and cut pattern portions are free of each other, to be sepd. continuously or in stages. The clamped waste portions of the material is moved upwards from the laying surface while the stamped sections remain in place through their own weight or by retainers for separation from the waste. The waste material movement is on the level of the laying surface and the cut material moves free on a downwards plane. The relative movement between the stack and the sepn. zone is by a sliding movement of the stack or movement of the clamp. ADVANTAGE - The operation gives a clean and mechanical sepn. of the fabric layers required for garment making from the waste, without manual work by operatives.
