Laboratory unit (1), esp. a magnetic stirrer unit, has a hot plate (3) above the housing (2) of the unit (1). Contact guard in the form of a bar (4) or ring is spaced from and extends around at least most of the hot plate periphery. Bar (4) or ring pref. extends around at least 3/4 of the hot plate periphery and is located around the upper edge of the hot plate (3). Pref. the bar(4) curvature corresponds to the contour of the hot plate. Bar may be a rod, e.g. a metal or steel wire, and is spaced from the hot plate (3) by a distance at least equal to its dia.. Pref. the spacing is such that the guard is heated to less than 60 deg.C. Bar (4) may be lossely attached to a holder rod (5) connected to the unit (10. ADVANTAGE - Guard avoids burns when the unit is grasped, e.g. for transport, while the hot plate is still hot or is switched on.
