A thin film of water is passed without addn. of reagents over a source of uv-light which contains wavelengths suitable for the formation of ozone molecules and OH-radicals. The oxygen content of the atmos. in the space between the water and the light source can be varied as required. A cylindrical or polyhedral reactor for carrying out the procedure comprises a housing, a water inlet, water outlet, water distribtuor, lower gas inlet, upper gas outlet and light source.The reactor may be surrounded by a chamber filled with a packing material. Part of the water flow is diverted through this chamber in which it is exposed to the gas flow over the extended surface area. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for photo-oxidative purifcn. esp. of drinking and waste waters. Provides continuous procedure which does not involve separate production and dosing of additive components. Accelerates the break-down of pesticides, herbicides etc. and allows the water to be efficiently enriched with oxygen.
