Process for coating a tundish for continuous casting of metals, especially of steel, according to which the constituent material of the refractory wear coating of the said tundish is prepared with the aid of raw natural dolomite or of raw natural calcite or of a mixture of these two materials, chosen with a particle size of between 0 and 5 mm, a binder is incorporated into this raw material in proportions of 0.4 to 5 % by weight, and an inorganic or organic plasticiser in proportions of 0.2 to 3 % by weight, and after it has been positioned on the tundish in aqueous form, this coating is decarbonated during its drying and its baking, characterised in that at least one compound exhibiting shrinkage properties at temperatures below approximately 700 DEG C is also incorporated into the said coating material. This compound is preferably an alkaline-earth metal hydroxide or a mixture of such hydroxides, incorporated into the said coating material in a proportion of 5 to 20 %. The invention also relates to a tundish coating and to a tundish thus coated.
