A method for treating a tooth surface to make it sufficiently bondable for dental purposes involves treating enamel and dentin with a primer comprising a) an organic acid, b) an iron, copper or cobalt salt and c) water, and then curing the tooth surface with a bonding material comprising d) a methacrylate or acrylate having at least one unsaturated double bond, e) a (thio)barbituric acid derivative and f) a polymerization initiator. The organic acid (a) may be citric, succinic, oxalic, fumeric, tartaric, malic, maleic or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or polyacrylic acid or an acrylic acid/maleic acid copolymer. Salt (b) may be ferrous, ferric, cuprous or cupric chloride, copper sulphate or acetate or acetylacetone copper. Component (e) is preferably 1-cyclohexyl-5-ethyl-barbituric acid.
