摘要 PURPOSE:To rapidly find out distance distribution over the whole image from a picked-up image without reducing the volume of information. CONSTITUTION:An object in a set range on the outside of a vehicle is picked up by a stereoscopic optical system 10 and the picked-up image is inputted to a stereoscopic image processor 20. In the processor 20, the analog image picked up by the optical system 10 is converted into a digital image by an image conversion part 30 and a city block distance calculating part 40 successively calculates city block distances for determining the gap variable (x) between right and left images from the image data obtained from the conversion part 30 while shifting picture elements one by one. A minimum/maximum value detecting part 50 detects the minimum value and maximum value of the city block distances and a gap variable determining part 60 checks whether the detected minimum value indicates coincidence between right and left small areas or not and determines the sheared variable (x), so that distance distribution information over the whole image can rapidly be outputted without reducing the volume of information.
