The foot pedal has an activation plate which can be moved from a neutral position, against the returning force of a spring (22), into at least two switching (11 to 15) positions in opposite directions to release a control process. The activation plate is held in the neutral position with a defined force by means of a catch (41). After a pressure point defined by the retaining force has been overcome, the movement of the activating plate is limited by either of two stops (27, 28) when it has traversed a relatively short path.
