The bottle crate has a rectangular base and side walls (16). It is divided into compartments by internal partitions (4) with each compartment receiving one bottle. The edges of the walls are designed for stacking. The height of the walls is slightly less than the height of the bottles so that the bottle tops project above the walls. The bottom of the crate has rows of rings with each ring arranged in the centre of the compartment bottom. When full crates are stacked the rings in the bottom of the upper crate receive the crown corks of the bottles in the lower crate and hold them in place.
