An electrically operated steam iron incorporates a housing equipped with a handle, and a water container that can be detached from the housing, which has an outlet in its bottom area. The water container outlet forms a part of a cylindrical coupling piece. In the coupled state, the coupling piece acts in conjunction with the boundary walls of a reception space incorporated into the housing for a decalcination agent and defines this space in the upwards direction. The condition of the decalcination agent is visible from the outside through a window.
