The pneumatic impact chisel has a piston working in a cylinder bore (2) against the chisel shank (8). An axial bore (3) in the cylinder (1) accommodates the shank rear end (7), while a protective sleeve (12) encloses the shank. An intermediate piece (5) has a rear stem (4) fitting in the bore, also a further bore (6) for the rear shank end. The sleeve fits loosely round the shank, and stops (14) limit its movement w.r.t. the shank in the direction of the chisel tip (13). Pref. a coil spring (10) is between the intermediate piece and the sleeve, holding the latter against the stop.
