A compsn. for regenerating an exhausted water softener in a household dishwashing machine based on common salt, contains 2-70(2-50) wt.% citric acid and/or Na citrate (dihydrate). The citric acid and/or Na citrate is metered into the container of the common salt. ADVANTAGE - The citric acid and/or Na citrate enhances the regenerating capacity of the common salt. In an example, 5 in.3 water of hardness 16 deg. d was treated in a water softener system (Type De Luxe from Firma Miele) and after 30 mins. had a residual hardness of 13-14 deg. d, using 100% common salt. By contrast, when a compsn. was used comprising common salt to which 5 wt.% citric acid was added, the residual hardness after 30 mins. was 8-9 deg. d.
