A coding system is used for identification. Bottles (2), beakers or other vessels are transferred to a filling station (3) where a specific product is added. The bottles pass to a station where an identification coding pattern is transferred. Filled and coded bottles are distributed and sold and, after use, the empties are returned to the processing plant. The coding is read and the bottles subjected to a quality check before being washed (9) for reuse.
