Free standing bodies made from pyrolytic graphite are heat treated by heating in a vacuum at temp. sufficient to vaporise high melting point impurities. The temp. and heating time are controlled so that no physical changes or microscopic structural changes occur and no vaporisation of the graphite occurs.
