To homogenise, mix and granulate malleable clays, with a moisture content of more than 15 wt.% of the dry material, the homogenising and mixing actions on one side and the granulation on the other side are effected separtely and successively in at least two different assemblies with separate settings for the process conditions. The start material for homogenising and mixing is fed continuously to the first assembly, and transferred continuously to the granulating appts. After granulation, the material is taken off continuously. Additives are pref. mixed in with the clay at the first appts., esp. with a content of C and/or ferrous oxide, to increase or decrease the malleable character of the clay and to affect the clay softening and melting properties. At the second stage, additives are introduced to aid granulation, e.g. lignin sulphate. USE/ADVANTAGE - For mfg. aerated clay. The process eliminates a drying stage, and gives an optimum mixing action to delivery constant granule sizes for the prodn. of aerated clay.
