The method reduces the collection of deposits on cleaning rakes in hydroelectric plant, etc. A turbulent backflow is generated on the rake, to churn-up any collected deposits. Any small solids in the deposits are flushed through the rake. The backflow is generated in a limited area only, so that it charges only part of the rake, eg along its length. The process is carried out by a swirl plate (10), which is located in the current in front of the rake (1). The plate is movable parallel to the rake tines (3). ADVANTAGE - Small solids are not removed from water current.
