Fast charging current is provided to a battery on a line Vc via an FET F21, and in response to sensing of full charge an FET (F82), (Fig 1B), is turned on to alter the resistance connected to a line Vs, whereby the output of a comparator OP51 goes low causing F21 to turn off and a transistor Q22 to turn on, thus providing a trickle charge current via a resistor R24. A charging current sensing circuit 60 also controls transistors F21, Q22 to regulate the fast charging current. An LED D43 indicates fast charging. A battery presence sensing circuit 30 is also provided. <IMAGE>
