The invention relates to a process for the preparation of methacrylate esters, wherein a propyne stream is isolated from a mixture of C<7>-hydrocarbons essentially consisting of propane, propene, propyne, propadiene and minor amounts of lower or higher carbon impurities, and said propyne stream is fed to a carbonylation unit and contacted therein with carbon monoxide and an alcohol in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst to form an alkyl methacrylate, characterized in that the mixture of C<7>-hydrocarbons is subjected to purification for essentially complete removal of hydrocarbon components having four or more carbon atoms. <IMAGE>
