For focusing an image capture apparatus equipped with means (4) for image digitisation, a succession of images is digitised in the form of a set of pixels (8) each characterised by a grey level, at least one oriented direction (dx, dy) is defined in the plane of the image, a succession of images is acquired (10) and digitised, and, for at least some pixels of each image, the gradient of the grey level is determined (13) in this direction. A histogram of the gradients is drawn up (14), and the histograms relating to two successive images are analysed (15, 16) in their part corresponding to the steepest grey level gradient, with a view to determining which histogram is the highest in this part. The best-focused image is that possessing this histogram. <IMAGE>
