PURPOSE:To improve an assembling property and reliability by providing projections consisting of solder, Au, In, etc., on the outer side of the photodetecting region of a photodetect and a polarization beam splitter and aligning these projections then connecting both by ultrasonic waves or heating. CONSTITUTION:The photodetector 31 mounted to the polarization beam splitter PBS 27 is formed with quarisected photodetecting surfaces 33a to 33d on an Si substrate 32. The active tubes of the photodetecting surfaces are coated with a protective film 34 consisting of SiO2. The projections 35a, 35b of 50 to 500mum diameter are provided on the protective film 34 on the outer side of the photodetector region and the optical element is joined by these projections. The projections are formed of the solder, Au, In, etc., by printing. The similar projections 36a, 36b are provided on the exit end face of the PBS as well. While the signals of the photodetectors 31 are kept monitored, the relative positions of both are adjusted and the projections are melted or alloyed by the heating or ultrasonic waves in the prescribed positions, by which the projections are joined. The assembly is fixed by an org. adhesive, etc., after joining. |
