The invention relates to a device for inspecting a vertical or inclined wall. The inspection means are carried by a carriage (1) rolling on the wall and which is subjected to the action of two cables, one cable (3) for the displacement of the carriage and one tensioned cable (2) which applies a pressure to the carriage so as to maintain the carriage in contact with the wall. The carriage is provided with a stop (17) carried on the carriage by means (9, 10, 11) capable of pushing the stop against the cable (2). The invention applies particularly to the inspection of dams, tanks or chimneys.
