PURPOSE:To improve the responsiveness of handwritten character input by providing a dedicated handwritten character recognition processing circuit for a tablet with a display, which is constituted by integrally superposing a degitizer and the display output-displaying data on the same face. CONSTITUTION:When an operator executs specified operation with an electronic pen or a mouse on the tablet 1, a character posting frame 12 appears on the tablet 1. Handwritten character data inputted in the character posting frame 12 by the operator is transmitted to a character recognition processing circuit 5 by way of an input control part 4. The character recognition processing circuit 5 operates independently of CPU 2 and retrieves a character recognition dictionary memory 6 being a dedicated memory so as to select a candidate character. The candidate character selected like this is displayed on the display by way of a screen display control part 7 and transmitted to an application software 10 operation on a host computer as a general character code.
