Fluorinated nitroalkyl cpds. of formula CF2X-C(R)(NO2)-C(R1)(R3)-C(R2)(H)-Y (I) are new; where X = F or H; R = H, halogen or 1-6C alkyl; R1, R2 and R3 = each H, halogen, CN, opt. substd. 1-6C alkyl or opt. substd. 6-10C aryl; or R1 and R2 together with the C atom to which they are attached, form an opt. substd. satd. 5-7C carbocyclic rinq; Y = COR4, -COOR5, -SO2OR6, CN or NO2; R4 = H, 1-6C alkyl or 6-10C aryl; or R3 and R4 together with the C atoms connecting them, form opt. substd. satd. 5-7C carbocyclic ring; R5 and R6 = 1-6C alkyl or 6-10C aryl; excluding the 2 combinations (i) X=F; R=F; R1-R3 = H; Y = -COOMe; (ii) X=F; R=Me; R1-R3 = H; Y = -COOMe. The reaction is carried out in the presence of alkali metal fluorides and a polar aprotic solvent. Pref. 3-5 mole CF2X-C(R)(NO2)-H (II; R=H) are useo per mole (III) or 1.2-3 mole (II; R = H) per mole (III). Pref. 0.1-100 mole % alkali fluoride are used (per mole (II)). The alkali fluoride is pref. potassium and/or caesium fluoride. Reaction is pref. at -20 deg. C to the b.pt. of the lowest boiling component, at normal pressure.
