<p>Fibres, including glass, carbon, metal, polypropylene, for the reinforcement of the foamed core of a contoured moulding having a covering layer, are fixed in the form of a mat or as separate, random-laid, long fibres, single-sided on the covering layer. The intermediate thus formed is placed in a tool giving the required contour and foam material is applied behind it. Pref. the fibres are glued to the covering layer. When a covering layer of thermoplastic material is used, esp. a thermoplastic synthetic, it is heated above the flow point, so that one side of the fibres penetrates the surface, and they are fixed in position. The foam used for the core is a flexible, soft, or semi-rigid polyurethane. Used for the prodn. of mouldings having at least in their edging zones, a foamed core reinforced by fibres, and a covering layer of synthetic material such as artificial leather or decorative film for use as coachwork in the automobile industry. The mouldings have low wt. and a high degree of rigidity, and a decorative appearance. They are also used in the furniture and building industries. The prodn. technique is simple and accurate positioning of the fibres and foam cores is guaranteed.</p> |
