The appts. has a manual switch (14) which renders an airbag system inoperative by earthing one input of an OR circuit (15). The OR circuit output remains at a high level and switches out a monitor relay (10) so that no current can be delivered to the detonator (7) even when a mechanical accelerometer (9) and its piezoelectric counterpart (1) respond to an impact. The inhibition of the airbag system is signalled by a lamp (18). A device determines when the vehicle is stopped and transfers the airbag system into the non-actuating condition. ADVANTAGE - Unnecessary inflation of he airbag is unconditionally inhibited for time when shock is applied in error to detector, e.g. during repairs or inspection.
