Control mechanism for tape laying apparatus is disclosed wherein the position of the web (42, 44) between two spools (40, 52) may be accurately known and controlled and the tension on the web (42,44) maintained. To accomplish such control, the motors (94, 92) driving the respective spools (40, 52) are driven by dynamic torque signals in response to change in position commands from a computer controller wherein the dynamic torque signals are correlated to the inertial torque and frictional torque of the spools (40,52) and their drives (94,92). |
