The press for stamping sheet metal is provided with a damper to damp the over-run of the press ram. The damper consists of a tubular housing attached to the press ram (8). A tubular piston slides in the housing whilst its lower end abuts against a bush. A stack of disc springs (17) is fitted above the tubular piston (20). When the ram descends so that the tubular piston (20) comes into contact with the bush (14), air is trapped in the bores of the piston and the housing.
