It is known to provide a cassette with a static memory in which parameters of the magnetic tape are recorded, such as tape status, recorded titles, type of tape, length of tape, type of recording process or premagnetization. The object of the invention is to provide a new type of reader for the static memory of such a cassette that opens new possibilities of application and is in particular useful for future small digital videocassettes. The reader is designed as a handy unit (1) that may be operated independently from the recorder and is provided with a receptacle for the cassette (7) with contacts (6) for the memory (11), as well as a field (2) for displaying the content of the memory (11). The invention is particularly useful for digital videorecording cassettes.
