<p>The present invention comprises an electrodialytic cell (303) and closed loop process for removing SO2 from SO2 containing gases (310). An aqueous scrubbing medium (315) is used to remove the SO2 from the gas. A two compartment electrodialytic water splitter (303) and a means for stripping (305) is used to isolate the SO2 (323) and regenerate the aqueous scrubbing medium. Use of univalent cation selective membranes, recycling (327) of the acid product to the base loop (319) of the water splitter (303), and a prescrubber (301) allow high concentrations of scrubbing solution to be treated without significant fouling inside the membranes. The above process embodiments may be used either alone or in combination.</p> |
