A stable, solid or semi-solid, antimicrobial composition is provided comprising a dialdehyde antimicrobial agent such as glutaraldehyde, and a carbohydrate such as a sugar or a polyol such as a sug ar alcohol. The composition can be employed to pre- serve, sanitize, disinfect, or sterilize a contaminated surface or area. The composition can also be combined with an absorbing agent to produce a moisture absorbent antimicrobial composition which can be used to absorb and disinfect biological spills such as body fluid spills.
