The device comprises a housing (20) provided to which is rotatably connected a cam. A cup tappet (25) is connected to the housing by a rotary or thrust link and transmits movement to the valve. The cam is so formed that in the total interval between closing and re-opening of the valve a positive acceleration occurs directed away from the cam, such acceleration being essentially constant. The cup tappet (25) during the valve arrest in the opening position is supported against the valve itself, and in the direction opposite to that of opening, by rotation of an intermediate tappet (24) supports on a separate support element (35).
