Blade coater obtains coating material from chamber (26) and distributes it through inlet (18) to the coating zone (23). Within the inlet (18) is stirring rib (6), or series of ribs, parallel to the doctor blade (5) with grooves, projections or holes which reduce the cross-section of the inlet by at least 30%. The shape of the ribs can vary along their length to give variable flow resistance. They can project to 30-45% of the inlet size (18), have a width of 0.85 to 1.45 times the groove width and be spaced apart 25-40% of the inlet size (18). Pref. the material (W) to be coated moves in the direction of the arrow (50) past blade (5) which is mounted on carrier (12) with flexible compression tubes (14). The coating material flows through holes (27) past serrated stirring ribs (6) which are designed to create some turbulence and even out the distribution into the coating zone (23) across the width. Excess material can return through an overflow (20) into a drain channel (29). Material removed by the blade (5) returns through a passage (8) to the drain channel (29).
