In the stepless automatic gearbox (1) the engine output torque (4) is converted into the necessary axle torque (5) with the aid of a speed-regulated drive (2) subject to electronic control (3) in response to input signals (6). The transmission ratio can be selected independently of load within given speed limits, giving smooth changes without abrupt variations in engine speed, and reducing the mfg. cost and fuel consumption. The speed-regulated drive (2) is also usable as a starter motor. ADVANTAGE - Simple structure enabling transmission ratio to be matched optimally to available tractive power.
