Process for the preparation of cycloalkanols by reacting cycloolefins with water in the presence of solid, acidic catalysts at a temperature from 50 to 280 DEG C under superatmospheric pressure, with the proviso that the pressure and temperature conditions suffice for the formation of a liquid phase of water and cycloolefins, characterised in that a mixture of water and cycloolefin is passed through a layer of solid, acidic catalysts which is held in a fixed position, with the proviso that no visible liquid phase is formed in this layer.
