PURPOSE: To properly expansibly inflate the air bag of an air bag inflator. CONSTITUTION: An air bag inflator is provided with a housing 12. The housing has a front opening for expanding an air bag 16 and a plurality of air inlet and exhaust ports 18 and 20 provided on the side walls 22 and 24 of the homing. The air bag is first folded and housed into the housing so as to overlie and close the ports on the side walls of the housing. When the air bag is expanded, it closes the ports during initial stage of the expansion. However, in a subsequent expansion stage, the ports are opened so that air can initially enter the housing and can be subsequently exhausted from the housing. |
