The invention relates to a device which can form part of a hitch or be interposed between the towbar and the head or the hitching point of any caravan or trailer equipped with cable-type braking (or hydraulic braking with a few circuit modifications). It eliminates any lateral loading on the towing vehicle above a given threshold, by creating an additional articulation which converts any lateral loading into a braking action on the wheel, opposing spontaneous cornering. It is made up of a sleeve tube (1) replacing the hitching head, articulated to a support (8) carrying the normal head, which support includes two anchoring points (19) tensioning the brake cables after the latter have crossed over, or actuating connecting rods in the case of hydraulic braking. The device is held in line by two springs (24) or by a locking ball (18). Recoil locking may be added. <IMAGE>
