PURPOSE:To obtain an optical rectifying device which has the rectification of a practical level utilizing organic materials by forming a photosensitive layer between electrodes, wherein light which exhibits rectifying characteristics in the photosensitive layer substantially cannot reach the vicinity of an opposite electrode of a light emitting side electrode. CONSTITUTION:A photosensitive layer is formed between electrodes one of which is at least an optically transmissive electrode. This photosensitive layer is produced by dispersing in a binder polymer either a low-molecular-weight compound which contains more than one nitrogen atom in a molecule, and possesses a hole transport characteristic, a compound having a function of affording memory characteristics, an electron attractive compound which is used if necessary, and does not have the function of affording memory characteristics, or a light absorbing pigment. When d.c. currents are fed to such an optical rectifying device, and when the rectification induced by light is effected by emitting light from the electrode having the optical transmission characteristics, the light that exhibits a rectifying characteristic falls to reach the opposite electrode, whereby a superior rectifying effect can be demonstrated.
