Creatine kinase (CK) is stabilised by disulphide modification by treating, in any order, with (a) molar excess of disulphide and/or thiosulphonate (I) and (b) a molar excess of water-soluble carbohydrate (II) as carrier. Also new are control/standard sera for assay of CK in which the CK exists as a reaction product with (I) and (II). The disulphide is cystine (or its methyl ester), homocystine and/or cystamine, and the thiosulphonate is S-methyl methanethiosulphonate. (II) is dextran of mol.wt. 4000-500000 and has been activated by reaction with 1-cyano-4-dimethylamino pyridinium tetrafluoroborate.
