Copolymers (I) comprise (A) base polymer consisting of (A1) 90-50 pts. (all pts. wt.) ethylene (A2) 10-50 pts. (1-4 C alkyl) acrylate, 3-8 C alpha-olefin, 4-8 C diolefin, (4-8 C alkyl) vinyl ether, styrene, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, or vinyl acetate; and (B) 0.2-5 pts., per 100 pts. (A), norbornene, stearyl-maleimide, aconitic acid (II), vinyl benzoate, or vinyl ester of formula (1) R1R2R3C-CO-O-CH=CH2 (where R1 is Me; and R2, R3 are 1-10C aliphatic gp). as graft monomer. Prepn. of (I) is by mixing (A), (B), and radical-forming catalyst (III) and reacting at 180-260 deg. C and 0.05-2.0 MPa. Pref., (A) consists of 85-60, (esp. 80-65) pts. (A1) and 15-40 (esp. 20-35) pts. (A2). (A2) is Me or Et acrylate, partic. tert. Bu acrylate, and esp. n-Bu acrylate or vinyl acetate. (B) is norbornene, vinyl ester of formula (1), and partic. (II). (I) has peel strength (test described) 5-30 N, impact toughness 1500-3000 mJ/sq.mm, and melt flow index (190 deg. C/2.16) 0.1-10 g/10 minutes. During prepn., (A), (B), and (II) are heated at 190-250, (esp. 200-240), deg.C. (III) is pref. organic peroxide, partic. 1,1-bis(tert.butylperoxy)cyclohexane, tert.butyl cumyl peroxide, 2,5-dimethylhex-3-yne 2,5-di-tert.butyl peroxide, and esp. 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di (tert.butylperoxy)hexane (IV). 0.01-0.2 Pt. (III) is used per 100 pts. (A), (B) and (III), dissolved in a solvent, are added to (A), mixed, solvent is removed, and components are reacted at raised temp. and opt. under raised pressure. USE/ADVANTAGE - Useful adhesive, adhesion promoter, additive for coextrusion, cable jacketing, and film material (claimed). (I) have very good adhesion properties and high toughness, partic. impact toughness.
