The method involves blocking each operational connecting line, with two-directional characteristics, of an exchange in one direction. The exchange has a traffic direction memory (VRS) which stores how many lines can be engaged for each engagement direction (k, d, a). A traffic meter (VEME) for each direction determines the value (VWA) of the actual traffic. Each value per engagement direction is compared with an actual line number (LZ) depending on the permitted traffic value (VMZ).
